If you were to open my fridge right now you’d see my hubby’s rather impressive collection of Tabasco hot sauces.  Looking like 6 little soldiers lined neatly in a row in our fridge door storage cubby, these hot sauces make my nutritarian dinners palatable for my decidedly non-nutritarian hubby.

Well, after years of this dinnertime torment I decided to get to work making a yummy hot sauce of my own.

And here it is!

I’d say this Nutritarian Hot Sauce recipe has a decidedly Mexican flavor profile, so it’s going to play quite nicely with these favorites:

  • Eat to Live Mexican Salad
  • Chipotle Lentil Black bean soup

How Much Can I Have?

This is only really an issue if you’re following Dr. Fuhrman’s Aggressive Weight Loss guidelines.  If you fall into that camp you’ll want to be mindful of the sodium and seed content in this recipe.

While this Nutritarian Hot Sauce recipe has no oil, using too much at a meal can throw you off your Eat to Live targets.  Therefore, as a general rule, I’d keep your daily hot sauce habit to less than 1/4 cup daily.

Nutritarian Hot Sauce

A Mexican-inspired, chipotle-flavored hot sauce that's oil-free, low-sodium, whole food plant based and compliant when you're following Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live plan.

  • 1/2 cup roasted red peppers (in water not oil)
  • 1 14.5 oz can no salt added fire-roasted tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp. liquid aminos
  • 1 tbsp. lime juice
  • 2 tbsp. ground flaxseed
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp. chipotle powder


  1. Drain and rinse the roasted red peppers.

  2. Combine all ingredients in your blender bowl and blend on high for at least 30 seconds or until smooth. 

Recipe Notes

Makes 1 3/4 cups sauce.

Serving size: 1/4 cup

Lasts for up to 10 days in fridge when stored in a glass container.

    why is this low sodium? is it not salt free? or where is the salt/sodium? many thanks

      Hi Kevin,

      It’s low sodium compared to store-bought hot sauces like Tobasco. The sodium comes from the liquid aminos and there is a bit in the jarred roasted red peppers too!

    Liquid aminos aren’t a whole food. And aren’t they basically sugar ?
    What else can I substitute ?

      Hi Ari, liquid aminos is different from coconut aminos (which is what I think you may be thinking of with the sugar concern). If you want you can just season with regular salt.

    Why does this recipe throw you off target if you are on eat to live plan? Is it the flaxseed?

      Hi Amy, it’s mostly the added sodium. The flaxseed is minimal when you break it down into 1 tablespoon servings but the sodium can still add up to being more than Dr. Fuhrman’s recommended 400 mg daily!
